Britain’s second longest running play after The Mousetrap, The Woman in Black tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black. He engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds.

Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation - “The most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter” (Daily Telegraph).

UNDERDOG: THE OTHER OTHER BRONTE

by Sarah Gordon

directed by Judith Boyd

Charlotte Brontë has a confession about how one sister became an idol, and the other became known as the third sister. You know the one. No, not that one. The other, other one… Anne.

This is not a story about well-behaved women. This is a story about the power of words. It’s about sisters and sisterhood, love and jealousy, support and competition.

Sarah Gordon’s new play is an irreverent retelling of the life and legend of the Brontë sisters, and the story of the sibling power dynamics that shaped their uneven rise to fame.

“A funny, bubbling, bolshie play about sisterhood, feminism, creativity and fame.” – Financial Times

“Enjoyably comic.” – The Arts Desk

It uncovers the flesh and blood females behind the Brontë myth while interrogating entrenched patriarchy in a broad satire punctuated with amusing anachronistic dialogue. ” –

Daily Express

Quick-witted drama.” –

The Guardian

This blistering myth-buster hits the wuthering heights.” –

London Theatre

Richly entertaining.” –

The Reviews Hub

Gordon’s dialogue is blunt, funny and wilfully anachronistic.” –

Birthday Celebrations

Let’s take a quick trip back to where it all began.
On
6 December 1945, a meeting was called by the Nambour Men’s Concert Party in the council boardroom. From that meeting, a committee was formed, and by 29 January 1946, plans were underway for two one-act plays and a revue, staged on June 19th and 20th.

Through every change, one thing has remained constant: our heart for theatre and community.

Challenges & Triumphs

Eighty years is an extraordinary achievement for any volunteer organisation. We’ve weathered fires, relocations, and countless challenges. For instance, when our Blackall Terrace theatre was destroyed, and later when Council requested our land for the Nambour Shopping Centre, we adapted and moved here although at the time it seemed so far away from the hub of town..

Audience Review

"I am still thinking about the play and the clever portrayal of the fine balance between survival and staying within the boundaries of your principles. Fantastic acting, the presence of Kathleen, Scott's wife, and Amundsen, his competitor, like Scott's subconscious on the stage, was completely enthralling. Amundsen grew on me as a pragmatic but caring guide. The death of Evans, after becoming completely confused, showed incredible talent by the actors to look real. Wow, I will remember this play for the rest of my life."
